They had two children, born 11 months apart, Elizabeth Louise Averell (1877-1886) and James G. Averell (1877-1904). Emily and Isaac separated ca. 1883, and were divorced in 1891. Later that year, Emily married James Sibley Watson, son of her father's partner Don Alonzo Watson. 7. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Emily Sibley Watson’s niece, younger daughter of Hobart Ford Atkinson and Zilpha Louise Sibley Atkinson. Her first husband was Gilman Henry Hubbell Perkins; after his death she married Ernest R. Willard. Her first husband’s mother, Caroline Perkins, was the founder of the Rochester Historical Society. After Marie Willard’s death she deeded her childhood home “Woodside” to the Historical Society, and it was the Society’s home for many years. Marie Willard was a charter member of the Children’s Auxiliary of Genesee Hospital and was a member of the hospital’s Board of Supervisors. She had been a member of the Memorial Art Gallery’s Board of Managers from its founding. Marie married Gilman Henry Hubbell Perkins 1889. 10. | Ruth Sibley ![]() Notes: Daughter of Emily Sibley Watson's brother Hiram Watson Sibley and his wife Margaret Durbin Harper Sibley, Ruth Sibley was close in age to her cousin James G. Averell. Her husband, John Allyne Gade, was architect of the Memorial Art Gallery. Mrs. Gade was one of the early donors of art to the Gallery's collection. In 1912, Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundson named a peak in the Queen Maud range on the South Pole in her honor, as a thank you for their support of his expedition. Ruth married 1907. In a 1/23/93 letter to her daughter, Elizabeth Sibley describes her newborn granddaughter, Margaret Urling Sibley, in terms of her likeness to her deceased brother. |

From an early age, J.G. accompanied his mother on her travels in the United States and Europe and he participated in the 1893 Trip Along the Nile. He was educated at the Fort Hill School in Rochester, St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, and Harvard College. Throughout, he studied violin, including under the tutelage of Rochester orchestral leader Herman Dossenbach, and performed with various musical groups. |
