Travels in Europe 1883-1884

On July 13, 1883, Hiram Sibley cut Isaac Averill, his son-in-law, out of his will. As her marriage to Averell collapsed, Hiram Sibley sent Emily Sibley Averell to Europe while he built her a house on Prince Street. On July 24th, two days before her ship sailed from New York, Emily is sent three letters, one from her niece's husband, Arthur Cosslett Smith, one from her pastor, Algernon Sydney Crapsey, and one from James Sibley Watson, already in Europe.  Smith's and Crapsey's letters refer to their pride in Emily in her time of trouble; Watson clearly knows nothing yet of the breakup of Emily's marriage.

It would appear that James Sibley Watson and his sister Belle connected with the Sibley-Averell party, because he and a two-year's older "Miss Watson" are listed on the ship's manifest with the Sibley/Averell party when they returned from Europe on the SS Oregon from Liverpool on June 16, 1884.

By 1884, Ike Averell had relocated to California.
