Ruth Crapsey was the sixth of eight children born to Rev. Algernon Sidney Crapsey and his wife Adelaide Trowbridge Crapsey. She may have been a sickly child. In a letter to her daughter 1/10/1893 Elizabeth Sibley writes: "I heard yesterday that Ruth is having gatherings in her head, she is very deaf does not improve in that respect."
