Taking gifts to the Governor, Tetouan, 1891

Emily Sibley Watson recounts examples of customs that she finds strange and different: “All Eastern music seems monotonous and rather weird to us, but there is a fascination about it just the same.” On finding that a present of groceries was customary to thank the Tetouan governor for his assistance in organizing a boar hunt, Emily says “this seemed a rather strange custom but then everything is unusual here.”
