Genesee Valley Hunt
J.G. Averell rode with the Genesee Valley Hunt as early as the fall of 1892, when J.G. was 14. The hunt included riders from Geneseo, Mount Morris, Avon, Batavia and Buffalo as well as Rochester. Prominent hunt families included the Wadsworths of Geneseo; the Carys of Batavia and Buffalo; and the Rumseys of Buffalo. James Sibley Watson, Sr. was a regular, and sometimes was called to serve as master of the hunt in the absence of its founder William Austin Wadsworth. J.G. himself served as master of the hunt at least once. The men and women who rode with the Genesee Valley Hunt were involved in other sports as well, and as wealthy western New Yorkers, formed part of J.G.’s circle of friends and acquaintances.
