Elizabeth Sibley has finally received word of Emily's miscarriage. They both speak of the "shock of last August" as a possible cause, probably referring to a widely-publicized false report that Hiram Watson Sibley's yacht had capsized.

Elizabeth reports on the news from home and Hobart Ford Atkinson & his daughter Elizabeth Smith's pending arrival at Gibraltar.  She also reports for the first time of Maggie Sibley's pregnancy and of the family's "living in a state of constant expectation" of the pending birth.
