The next day, James Sibley Watson writes from Mammoth Hot Springs, having travelled to Soda Butte to pick up mail and meet up with Arthur Cosslett Smith, and finding neither mail nor Arthur. Watson rides on to Mammoth Hot Springs (35 miles) to find his unforwarded mail and discover that Arthur will not be able to join him in Yellowstone.
