J.G. begins his letter "My dear Mother, Doesn't it sound grand?" a possible reference to the fact that she was 5 months pregnant with his half-brother, James Sibley Watson, Jr.

In this letter, J.G. describes attending a performance of Die Walküre presented by Walter Damrosch's German Opera Company.  Many of J.G.'s letters describe operas he saw in Boston and New York.
