From the Camping in Morocco Manuscript:
"One soldier, a Moro-del-Rey, and a most picturesque old fellow in his white burnous and turban and long Arab gown, rode on ahead."
"Our way first led through sand dunes and by the blue sea, then over a fertile plain where peasants were ploughing with oxen harnessed to wooden ploughs as in Bible times..."
"...and where we saw women carrying loads of grass and grain on their heads. Every where were wild flowers, and following the courses of the brooks great masses of pink oleanders aglow with color."
"Later we came to a more mountainous region and suddenly a caravan of camels appeared over a ridge, looking most Oriental and picturesque."
"...we rode on, and presently came to a funny little village of round thatched huts, looking exactly like the pictures in African exploration books. As is the custom in those countries there was a hut set aside for the use of travelers & in this a rug was spread on the ground and every thing made dry and comfortable for us. We crept through the low opening and sitting on the rug prepared to eat our lunch. It was good fun to be lunching in an African hut, a novel experience surely, and even the pouring rain outside could not dampen our enthusiasm."
"Later we journeyed on again through showers, until about seven o’clock when we reached our Camp. The tents were pitched, the camp fires lighted, and our one-eyed Spanish cook was preparing our evening meal."
