In this letter from October 19, 1890, James Sibley Watson suggests that Elizabeth Sibley "really means to go to California this winter if you stay."

Jimmie also encourages Emily by saying: "Of course it was all right to tell [Canfield] what you did & I should have told you so before if it had occurred to me that you would have worried about it."

We know little about the exact causes of Emily's separation from Ike Averell; unfortunately, we similarly have no documentation of what Jimmie is referring to that Emily might have said to her lawyer.
