Beginning to be very anxious
James Sibley Watson's letter of October 17, 1890 in response to Emily's letter of October 9th shows his anxiety to hear news from George Folger Canfield. He writes: "I have just been up to Hiram to see if they had any news from C. I have heard nothing about him or from him for nearly a week now & I am beginning to be very anxious indeed. It is hard here but it must be so very much harder for you wait out there alone?"
He also comments: "Mrs. S. was at Hiram & she seems to get such peculiar notions from your letters to her. She & Hiram think that you are quite contented in Santa Barbara & in fact would be rather disappointed if you had to return at once! I did not attempt to correct their error as it seemed to please them to think you were getting along so well."
