James Sibley Watson's letter of October 7, 1890 acknowledges Emily's letter of October 1st, and tries to stay cheerful in the wake of little news: "I know how terribly disappointing it will be if everything breaks down & you have to stay in Cal for the winter...still I cannot believe that C. will fail & I am going to hope for the best & that you will be back in a few weeks."
