Canada's Cup Trials-2

Letter from James G. Averell to Emily Sibley Watson, May 6, 1899

1899-05-06

J.G. writes that he has gone up to Quincy, MA to view the boat being built for the Rochester Yacht Club's entry in the Canada's Cup trials. He adds that Commodore J.E. Burroughs "wants me to sail on her at Chicago, in spite of the fact that I wont have much time to get in training. I feel very much complimented but do not feel that I deserve the confidence which [he] seems to feel in my sailing ability. I hope he isn’t doing it because we own such a large share in the boat, for the crew of a boat shouldn’t be selected through “pull.”"
