1902: Looking at Ponies

Letter from James G. Averell to Emily Sibley Watson, February 19, 1902

1902-02-19

J.G. is considering purchasing ponies, presumably for polo: "I went out to Dedham to look at ponies last week and have decided to get one, and I wish the Commodore [James Sibley Watson, Sr.] would get one too for there are three for sale for $600 if they are sold together, or 250 each if only one is sold. As two of these ponies were bought for $500 apiece and as they are very handy, though not fast. I don’t think they are charging too much. Pad Rumsey says they are well worth it."

"Pad" Rumsey was a polo player from Buffalo, a member of the Genesee Valley and Myopia Hunt clubs, and an artist who would live to participate in the 1913 Armory show.
