Golfing in Detroit

Letter from James G. Averell to Emily Sibley Watson, September 30, 1900

1900-09-30

Settling in for the Fall semester at Harvard, J.G. makes plans to participate in a golf tournament held in Detroit: "My courses have straightened out pretty well, and I shall not miss a great deal by going to Detroit." The second annual golf tournament of the League of the Lower Lakes was being held at the Grosse Pointe Country Club on October 4th, 1900. In the morning the Rochester team beat Buffalo, and then lost in the afternoon finals to the Detroit team. The Democrat & Chronicle reported on October 7th that J.G. played in the individual championships over the next two days, losing in a hotly contested, extra-hole game in the semi-finals.

J.G. also inquires after the date of the official launching of the Watson family's third steam yacht, the Genesee (not to be confused with the racing yacht of the same name which won the Canada's Cup for the Rochester Yacht Club the previous year).
