Golfing and Yachting

From yachting to golfing, J.G.'s summer of 1898 was active.  Sometimes events were held so closely together that it was not possible to do both.  The Democrat and Chronicle on August 21, 1898 reported on a Rochester Yacht Club race off Charlotte that Buell Mills captained in J.G.'s absence.  The newspaper hoped that J.G. would "be back on Labor Day with his regular crew," noting that he would be golfing at Niagara-on-the-Lake September 1-3.  The paper stated that "the Veritas is too good a boat to be missed on the last and best race in the season's schedule."

The paper later reported that J.G. played "fine golf" in the handicap and preliminary round at Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The Veritas did compete on Labor Day, but did not win the race.  In all, the Veritas participated in seven Rochester Yacht Club races in 1898, with J.G. captaining the boat for all but two.
